Can you lay sandstone on sand, or do you need a mortar bed? 

A full mortar bed is best for sandstone slabs, especially for patios, pathways, and areas taking regular foot traffic. Laying on a sand/sub-base system is more common for setts or block pavers. Check the intended use and traffic load before choosing a laying method, or ask our team for guidance on your specific project. 

Should sandstone be sealed? 

Yes. Sandstone is porous, and sealing can reduce the chances of staining from general use, garden debris and organic growth. Sealants help protect colour depth over time. This is a key difference from porcelain paving, which does not require sealing. 

How do I clean sandstone slabs? 

Regular cleaning with a mild detergent and water is usually sufficient. Avoid harsh acid-based or bleach cleaners, which can affect natural colour and surface texture over time. A pressure washer on a low setting can help remove organic growth, but check sealant guidance first if the stone has been sealed. 

Why do my slabs look different colours? 

Colour variation between individual sandstone slabs is normal and expected. It's a feature of natural stone, not a manufacturing defect. Sandstone is quarried, not manufactured, so tone, veining and shade will vary slightly across a batch and even within the same pack. If you want a more uniform look, request a sample pack before ordering to see the typical colour range for your chosen shade.
