It is also, not accidentally, the more modern of the two bathroom vanity unit formats: modern wall-mounted vanity units are what most new-build Irish bathrooms are specified with by default now.

Because there is no plinth taking up depth, most wall-hung ranges also run slightly shallower front-to-back than an equivalent freestanding vanity unit (Worth checking if your bathroom is narrow rather than short on wall length).

Installation: Wall Type and Clearance

A wall-hung unit needs a wall capable of carrying its full weight once it's loaded with water, toiletries and everyday use, not just its empty weight off the shelf. On a solid masonry or block wall, this is usually straightforward with the correct heavy-duty fixings. 

On a stud or dry-lined wall, you generally need noggins (horizontal blocking) fitted between the studs at the unit's fixing height before the wall is tiled, or a specifically rated cavity fixing system if the noggins weren't planned in advance. Leave enough clearance underneath the unit for cleaning and, if relevant, wheelchair or seated access; 15–20cm off the floor is the low end for that, with more preferred where accessibility is a factor.

What sizes are available (600mm, 900mm, 1200mm, 1500mm)? 

The wall-hung range runs from 400mm up to 1400mm rather than the full 1500mm you'll see on freestanding units. 600mm and 900mm are the most common single-basin widths for a family bathroom; 1200mm and above move into double-sink wall-hung vanity territory for a shared bathroom.

How much clearance is needed underneath for cleaning or accessibility? 

As a general guide, 15–20cm of clear floor space beneath the unit is enough for everyday mopping and cleaning. If the bathroom needs to accommodate a wheelchair or a seated user, that clearance typically needs to increase substantially, and the mounting height should be set to suit; get specific guidance for the household rather than relying on a standard figure.

Is MDF or plywood moisture-resistant enough for Irish bathrooms? 

Not all board is equal here, and it's worth asking the specific question rather than assuming "wood" means "waterproof." Moisture-resistant MDF and marine-grade plywood are both designed to cope with a humid bathroom environment far better than standard chipboard, provided the finish (lacquer, veneer or paint) fully seals the edges and cut-outs where water is most likely to sit.

Do wall hung units support heavy countertops safely? 

Yes, provided the wall fixing is rated for the combined weight of the cabinet, the countertop and normal daily use, and the wall type (solid or stud) is prepared correctly beforehand. The countertop material itself, porcelain, marble or a lighter composite, affects the total load, so it's worth confirming the fixing spec against the specific top you're choosing rather than assuming one fixing kit suits every finish.

What wall type is required — solid wall or stud wall? 

Both are workable. A solid masonry or block wall generally takes standard heavy-duty fixings without extra preparation. A stud or dry-lined wall needs noggins fitted between the studs at the correct height before tiling, or a rated cavity fixing system if that wasn't planned in advance; this is the detail worth locking down at first fix, not after the tiles are up.
